On Friday, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both reached intraday records after midday, while the Nasdaq rose 0.1%, recovering from earlier losses. Government bond yields showed mixed performance, and crude oil futures faced a decline. In the energy sector, the iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) edged up 0.1%, and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) saw a 0.2% rise.
However, the technology sector faced setbacks, with the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) decreasing by 0.2%. The iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) also reported declines, while the SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) eased 0.2%, and the iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) dropped 1.1%. Turning to the financial sector, the Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose by 1.1%, with the Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) advancing 2.8%.
In contrast, its bearish counterpart, the Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), fell by 2.8%. In commodities, crude oil fell by 2.6%, with the United States Oil Fund (USO) dropping 2.1%. Natural gas saw a decline of 1.2%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) lost 1.5%. Meanwhile, gold prices fell 0.4% on Comex, and the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) decreased by 0.6%.
Silver also saw declines, with a 1.2% drop, while the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) shed 1.9%. In consumer stocks, the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) rose 1.2%, with Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) both climbing. The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) also had an uptick of 1.4%, with the retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) gaining 0.3%, although the SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) faced a decline of 0.6%. In the health care sector, the Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose by 1%, along with gains for the iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT).
Additionally, the iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) reported a gain of 0.4%. The industrial sector saw growth with the Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) rising by 1.2%, alongside gains in Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ)..
