UnitedHealth Group CEO Calls for Fixing the Flawed US Health System
9 months ago

UnitedHealth Group Chief Executive Andrew Witty stated that the US health care system is "flawed" and requires significant improvements. Witty expressed sorrow over the tragic death of Brian Thompson, CEO of the company's insurance arm, UnitedHealthcare, who was fatally shot in New York last week. Reports indicate that Luigi Mangione is the suspect apprehended in relation to Thompson's murder.

The etching found on the bullet casings in the killing incident suggests that dissatisfaction with health insurance coverage denials may have played a role, as noted by Macquarie in a communication to clients earlier this week. Importantly, Mangione was reportedly not insured by UnitedHealth. Witty acknowledged the inadequacies of the health system, recognizing the frustrations that people experience.

In a New York Times opinion piece published Friday, he explained, "No one would design a system like the one we have. And no one did. It's a patchwork built over decades." Thompson championed initiatives aimed at making healthcare more affordable and transparent. Witty remarked, "Health care is both intensely personal and very complicated, and the reasons behind coverage decisions are not well understood.

We share some of the responsibility for that." He underscored the importance of collective efforts to clarify how insurance coverage decisions are made. "Behind each decision lies a comprehensive and continually updated body of clinical evidence focused on achieving the best health outcomes and ensuring patient safety." While UnitedHealth shares increased by 1.5% in Friday afternoon trading, they have seen a drop of 14% in value thus far this month.

The company is "willing to partner with anyone" to enhance the delivery of high-quality care and to reduce costs, as Witty emphasized, "Clearly, we are not there yet." Price: 522.06, Change: +6.30, Percent Change: +1.22.
