Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV experienced gains, while the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) saw a decrease of 0.3%. In the United States, equity indexes displayed a mixed performance during midday trading on Monday, with declining technology shares placing pressure on the Nasdaq Composite.
In the energy sector, iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) both recorded a 0.5% increase. Conversely, the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) fell by 0.8%, alongside both iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM), which also declined.
Notably, SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) dropped 3.6% while iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) fell by 3.2%. In the financials segment, Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 1.8%. The Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) advanced significantly by 5.3%, while its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), dropped 5.2%.
Turning to commodities, crude oil prices decreased by 3%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) fell 3.2%. Natural gas showed remarkable gains, rising by 9.1%, with the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) soaring 9.6%. Amidst market fluctuations, gold prices fell by 2.8% on Comex, while SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) experienced a decline of 2.6%.
Silver also saw a decrease of 2.5%, accompanied by a fall of 2.3% in iShares Silver Trust (SLV). Consumer sectors saw some fractional gains with Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) rising slightly. Both Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) reported increases as well.
Meanwhile, Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) climbed by 1.7%, and the retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) gained 0.5%, while SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) added 1.6%. In the health care sector, Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) saw a minimal decrease of 0.1%. iShares US Healthcare (IYH) matched this decline, while Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) rose slightly by a fraction.
The iShares NASDAQ Biotechnology ETF (IBB) managed to gain 0.1%. Lastly, in the industrials segment, Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) rose by 1%, with Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) also reporting gains..
